Make Better Stuff Introduces the Kairos Light
The Kairos Light is the first in a line of product-systems by Make Better Stuff, an organization that makes stuff that’s good for people and the planet. The Kairos Light system enables users to tune their light to natural phenomena, such as lunar phases. Kairos embodies a design principle called biophilia, from the Greek words bio, meaning “life,” and philia, meaning “fondness for.” We can use biophilia to connect architecture to nature because this connection has positive effects on our mental health and our sense of community. The Kairos light system is ideal for people who value unique design in public spaces like offices, co-working spaces, or wellness centers.
Kairos was conceived at Ithaca Generator Makerspace and developed into a functioning prototype in the Southern Tier Hardware Accelerator at REV this past summer (2015). In the 12-week accelerator program, designer Xanthe Matychak worked with contract manufacturer Wicked Device in Ithaca, NY, and sourced FSC domestic ash from Certainly Wood in East Aurora, NY. Matychak aims to source and manufacture the light entirely in New York State. (She is Brooklyn born and a New Yorker through and through.)
Who is Make Better Stuff?
Xanthe Matychak Founder
Xanthe Matychak is the founder of Make Better Stuff (MBS) – an organization that makes stuff that’s good for people and the planet. MBS started as a TEDx Talk in 2011, in which Matychak spoke to the future of desktop manufacturing and distribution. That talk evolved into a blog (makebetterstuff.org) and series of workshops on creativity and sustainable design. In 2015 Make Better Stuff participated in two meetings at The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, discussing the future of American Manufacturing with other technologists. Matychak has a MFA in Industrial Design from RIT with a concentration in sustainability. She teaches Make Better Stuff Lab and Make Better Stuff Studio in The Department of Environmental Science at Ithaca College.
